Biennials of the South

Anthony Gardner is an Associate Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory, working at the intersection of political theory and art and exhibition histories since the early 1950s. He is also the Director of Graduate Studies at the Ruskin and a Fellow of The Queen’s College.
In 2010-2011, he was the Research Forum / Andrew Mellon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, and in 2011-2012, an ARC Research Fellow through the Art History programme at the University of Melbourne. He completed his PhD at the Centre for Contemporary Art and Politics, the University of New South Wales, Australia, and has a MA by research and a LLB (Hons) from the University of Melbourne.
Gardner’s main research areas are postcolonialism, postsocialism and curatorial histories. Among his book projects are “Politically Unbecoming : Postsocialist Art against Democracy” (MIT Press, Spring 2015), “Mega-Exhibitions : Biennials, Triennials, Documentas” (with Charles Green, Wiley-Blackwell, 2016) and the anthology “Neue Slowenische Kunst” (with Zdenka Badovinac and Eda Čufer, Summer 2015). He is also an editor of the MIT Press journal “ARTMargins” (http://www.mitpressjournals.org/loi/artm) and the anthology “Mapping South : Journeys in South-South Cultural Relations” (Melbourne, 2013), and has published in many other books and journals including “Third Text”, “Postcolonial Studies”, “The Cambridge Companion to Australian Art” and “Global Studies : Mapping Contemporary Art and Culture”.
